What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Through regularly scheduled sessions, we collaborate to help you take “action” steps to discover, learn, and grow.

To help you achieve your goals, my coaching offers:

  • Support
  • Encouragement
  • Perspective
  • Strategies
  • Accountability

I use the co-active coaching approach.  We are a team.  Our goal is to create a safe, open, supportive, challenging and meaningful experience together.

Our time together is focused on your present circumstances and how to move forward into the future you desire.

Coaching is most impactful over time.  A minimum of 3 months is recommended with 6 months to a year being more beneficial.  Each coaching relationship is different and is designed to maximize benefit to the client.  Sessions may be shorter or longer, meet more or less frequently, and be in person, via phone, or video session.

What Coaching Is Not

  • Psychotherapy
  • Consulting
  • Mentoring
  • Training
  • Athletic Development

Coaching is not psychotherapy and I do not diagnose.  It is also not a substitute for professional advice by legal, mental, medical or other qualified professionals.

Who Looks for a Coach?

“I found that every single successful person I’ve ever spoken to had a turning point, and the turning point was where they made a clear, specific, unequivocal decision that they were not going to live like this anymore.  Some people make that decision at 15, and some people make it at 50, and most never make it at all.”  Brian Tracy, motivational speaker and author

According to the 2017 International Coaching Federation (ICF) Global Consumer Awareness Study, the following are typical reasons to seek professional coaching:

  • Optimize individual/team work performance (43%)
  • Improve communication skills (39%)
  • Increase productivity (38%)
  • Expand career opportunities (35%)
  • Increase self-esteem/self-confidence (34%)
  • Manage work/life balance (34%)
  • Improve business management (32%)

Is Coaching Right for Me?

“You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.”  Jim Rohn, entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker

The best way to determine if coaching is for you is to contact me and discuss specifics.  We can assess:

  • What is your personal or professional life like today?
  • In what area or areas would you most like to experience change?
  • What have you tried already?
  • How might coaching help you?
  • What is your readiness to commit to making real changes?

If coaching is not a good fit or if I do not have the appropriate experience to help you, we can brainstorm other options for attaining your goals.

What Can I Expect?

“The turning point is that moment of naked acceptance of the truth.” Ellyn Stern, American actress, voice actress, and director

Initial Discovery Session

The Discovery session is typically 60 minutes.  We use the session time to evaluate together where you would like to focus our coaching time.  Along with discussing where you are now and where you are going, we take time to design me as your best coach.

If it appears we are a good match, we sign a coaching agreement and determine how frequently to meet, for how long, and other logistics.

We design what is needed to create a safe space where you can share openly, feel supported, and we can have a meaningful experience together.

Each coaching relationship is different and our goal is to maximize benefit and value to you. Sessions may be shorter or longer, we may meet more or less frequently, and may meet in person, via phone, or video session.

Clients may pay for individual sessions or for a desired number of hours of coaching time. Payment is received up front for all services

Coaching Sessions

After the initial Discovery session, we move into our coaching sessions.

Each coaching session begins with a check-in to see how things are going. If you had items you hoped to accomplish prior to our session, we review successes or roadblocks you experienced as well as what you learned.

For the majority of our session time, we explore whatever topic feels most important and helpful to you.  I collaborate with you as a peer.  Using coaching skills such as powerful questioning, curiosity, and active listening, we discover together what matters most to you.

Coaching is about transforming the whole person: heart, mind, body and spirit. The focus is on your present circumstances and how to move forward towards your desired future.

During our sessions, I offer you support, encouragement, perspective, strategies, and accountability to support you in achieving your desired results.

As each coaching session ends, I may challenge you to try new things and you may commit to taking specific actions you would like to be held accountable for between now and the next session.

Working with Kim as a life coach was an incredible experience.  Kim’s enthusiasm and expertise made the process powerful!  I was able to connect with my inner leader and find ways to balance out my life more thoroughly.  With exercises designed to help narrow my values and incorporate them into my everyday life, I found the sessions helpful, guided and professional.

Don’t confuse counseling with coaching.  It’s not an either/or.  They are not the same and I for one, benefited from both.
